With the chilli mornings and the beautiful
colours of the scenery around us, autumn is certainly upon us. Our favourite
time of year brings roaring fires, pumpkin lanterns, Guy Fawkes and delicious
rich autumn foods. Which foods remind you of autumn? For us it’s the treacle toffee and toffee
apples, the bonfire treats for the children but loved even more by adults. But do you ever stop and think about the
history behind our traditions? Who created these beautiful, sticky, delicious
treats? Back in 1908 in New Jersey, candy maker
William W Kolb was creating a delicious vibrant looking Christmas candy with
sugar and cinnamon and wanted to show it off in his shop window. He dipped
apples in the vibrant red candy and placed them in his shop window and the
first candy apple sold for 5 cents. Soon candy apples were selling at circuses,
festivals and stores nationwide. We love a little history and tradition at
Abbey mill as there’s always a story to tell the children/grandchildren. Next time your having a family day, think
about what autumn means to you and think about the beautiful colours in the
leaves, the log fire, the bonfire toffee and the toffee apple and wrap up and
take a brisk autumn walk. Remember, the scenery is stunning at Furness abbey in
all seasons and we welcome you for a hot drink and a toffee apple or a bowl of
pumpkin soup at Abbey mill.
Have a safe and cosy Autumn!
